Moving to Sweden

So time for another update.

Not a very good blog, too infrequent, but well no matter.

I have now been living almost 8 years and 7 months in Holland.

And I had decided quire a while ago that it was time to move on.

So, on the 27th of June we will move to Stockholm.

In regards to the server, there should already be a an Internet connection there by the time we move there, and I will move the server with me and set it up in Sweden, but that does mean that it wil be down for some time.

Count that it might take the whole weekend of 27-30 of June to get everything set up.

If for some reason Internet is not set up by the time we get there, I have a backup plan to put it at my Mothers place, but that could add some time.

The good News is that while server is currently on an ADSL connection with only about 1mbit upstream, the connection in Sweden will be 100mbit, so hopefully it should be a bit faster.

Will try to make some more updates later.

Brian.

New harddrive arrived and installed.

Hello everyone.

Yesterday the new hard drive, kindly donated by Ronald, arrived.
It is a Seagate Barracuda ES 250GB Type ST3250620NS.

I have installed it in the server, and after much fuss with mixing Serial ATA and normal IDE it is now working.

I will start setting up a backup scheme to run daily backups of the Album, websites, databases and mail to this drive.

At the same time I am working on switched my external hosting provider to a new one.
The External hosting provider is hosting some other domains that I own. www.levinsen.nu, www.bt-rota.net, www.eldaria.com, and www.gobly.net.
With this new provider I have a massive amount of space available, and I will use some of this space as an External backup solution.
More on this later.

Hopefully in the future I will scrape together enough money to build a 1 or 2 Unit high server and then host all of the domains on my own server, but co-located for better reliablilty. But this is probably some years into the future.

New site launched on Eldaria.

Hello everyone.
One of my collegues decided to go on Holiday, and as part of that he wants to have a blog, and an album.
So I offered him some space on my Server.
You can find the blog here.
And the album here.

As you have seen earlier there is no backup solution on the server, well as a thanks he offered to pay for an extra harddrive.
So soon I will install an additional 250Gig Harddrive that is going to act as a Backup.

Thank you Ronald.

New Look.

OK so I changed the look on the frontpage of Eldaria.

I got on the wave of Blogging., my previous page where anyway just a bunch of updates of what is going on, and a very bad one at that considering nothing happend.

Figured I could just as well change it into a blog, hoping that it would give me an incentive to make more updates of my fantastically interesting life. Hmmm….

More mess

OK I was messing with the server again, I was setting up some local file sharing in my house and wanted to change the Permissions on my server.
So I accidentally changed permissions on some folders where I should not change permission, and all of a sudden I could no longer log into server, and I could also no longer Boot up the Server.
Luckily I had already started some small backup tasks and was able to restore the server relatively fast.

Almost Done.

Ok most of the server is setup.

The album looks odd, I have to find out why, think it is related to configuration, so i’m still looking into that.

Also if you had any custom thumbnails setup, you will have to redo them.

Mail is not setup yet, so if you where using eldaria for E-mail, then you will have to wait a bit longer untill I figure out to fix it.

If you find anything else that is not working let me know.

Maintenance

Today and perhaps tomorrow the server will be down for maintenance.

Please be aware that during this time, server will at times not be online at all and at other times most pages will be offline.

Hopefully everything will be back online tomorrow or Monday.

If it works don’t fu** with it.

Now that’s a saying that I should have listened to.

As you know I upgraded the server, now I though everything was fine. But No!….
I can’t send e-mails, And the server is crashing or freezing up at random with no specific reason shown in the logs.
So this blog is a heads up to all my users that in the upcoming weekend of 11th of November I will be taking down the server for maintenance, this is to restore it to it’s previous setup.

Server down for some days.

Thursday I decided to upgrade Ubuntu from version 6.06 to 6.10, and this was a big misstake.
I was running the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 6.06, and the upgrade should have been smooth, but because of a bug in mysql 64bit, the album and everything else relying on the sql server, went down.
Since I don’t have the money for a backup system, I was left only with the choice of recovering by a reinstall of the server.(hint, hint) :-)
So I was wondering if I should downgrade to the 6.06 version again, or change to 32 bit.
I have already had some other troubles with running 64bit, so I have now settled for a 32 bit.
I had to set everything up from scratch, however everything should be working now.
If you see something not working, then please let me know.

To explain a bit more what kind of redundancy I’m running.
The server is in my house, so not in a hosting center, this means no UPS, if the power goes in my house, the server goes.
The server itself has 2x250GB drives running in a mirror, this means that all data is existing on both drives at the same time, and if one harddive fails physically, the other one takes over, without any delay, or dataloss.
On this mirror are critical files, such as Mail, Web sites, including the album, here are also my personal file storage located.
Now this setup does not protect against failures such as the one I just had, where an upgrade went wrong.
It also will not protect from mistakes of accidental deleting a file or something, or even worse Fire, lightning or anything else destroying the server.
For this I would need to invest in a backup solution, This is something i really want for the server.
However backup is not cheap, let’s say I would like to only keep a backup of the websites with the albums, and the mails.
Uncompressed, that would be about 25GB, with compression we might get it down to 20GB.
So with taking the future growth into account, I would need a backup solution capable of about 50-60GB.
There are a couple of different solutions for this.

Type: Capacity: Cost: Comments:
On-line backup solutions Variable Depends on capacity, but in the range of €200 per month for 100GB High Availability, and very secure since data is not kept in the same place as server. But also very expensive.
DAT Tape streamer 20-216 GB uncompressed, and 40-432 GB compressed. €500-$1800 The solution I’m most interested in since it has no monthly cost and the DAT tapes or relatively cheap. I would also be able to take tapes out of the house to store off site in case of Fire or similar. Unfortunately the initial cost for getting the capacity I need is high, and not something I can afford.
An Extra harddrive. 80-500GB €49-€300 The cheapest solution. Problem is that a lightning, or a fire would still be able to destroy the data.
A second server, located offsite. Any €80-€300 + Any monthly cost. I have some spare hardware lying around, this I could use to build an extra file server. I could place this server either at my mothers place in Sweden or my Fathers place in Denmark. This is a solution I have been thinking about, but there are other implications in that if something goes wrong, I would not be able to fix it very easy.

Right now I’m looking mostly on the solution of a DAT streamer, but I do not have the money to invest in this, so for now there will be no backup, I might get an Extra hardrive to keep backups on, but at the moment my finances does not allow any investments.

Bad Motherboard, and bad Harddrives turning my hair grey.

OK, time for another update.
As you noticed a lot of down time lately.
I been having a lot of trouble with the new hardware.
The server kept crashing everytime I added the second drive to the Raid setup.
I found that the Motherboard was not very compatible with Linux, so took it back to the store where I bought it.
And instead I bought the Asus P5LD2 Deluxe motherboard with Intel 945 chipset.
However also this motherboard was giving some headache, due to the on-board IDE controller.
But after a lot of fiddling around with jumpers and placing hard drives differently I got it to install Linux again.
But story does not end there, After getting everything installed I realized that also one of the Hardrives was damaged, and the Raid would no longer establish.
I have requested an RMA, and Maxtor has sent me a new drive, so until this is installed,
there is no mirror for the server, but I am running daily backup.
Unfortunately for my Album users, the user details went out the door with the raid failing, since mysql is not too happy about file only backup.
I will add all albums again, but you need to create your self as a user, then drop me a mail, and I will assign your album to you.
